The globally awaited International Standard for occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) is now published, and is meant to define occupational health and safety practices worldwide.
Chair of project committee (ISO/PC 283 who published ISO 45001), David Smith reaffirms the latest International Standard will be a true game maker for thousands and thousands of workers, he said: “It is hoped that ISO 45001 will lead to a major transformation in workplace practices and reduce the tragic toll of work-related accidents and illnesses across the globe.”
Smith further added to his point saying: “World standards writers have come together to provide a framework for a safer workplace for all, whatever sector you work in and wherever you work in the world.” Over seventy countries played part in the development of this crucial document, OHSMS i.e. Occupational health and safety management systems, whereas the BSI i.e, British Standards Institution served as the committee secretariat.
For the reason, ISO 45001 is articulated to liaison with other ISO management systems standards, making sure an increased integration with the new versions of quality management system i.e. ISO 9001 and environment management system i.e. ISO 14001. Therefore companies that already applied an ISO standard will have an advantage if they adopt ISO 45001 for easier integration and implementation.
The ISO 45001:2018 OHSMS standard is founded on the usual elements used in all of ISO’s management systems standards and utilizes a common Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model, which offers a foundation for companies to plan what they require to implement so as to mitigate the danger of harm. ISO 45001 will substitute OHSAS 18001:2007, the global standard for health and safety at job earlier. Companies already compliant to OHSAS 18001 will have a period of three years to migrate with the latest ISO 45001 standard, even though certification of conformance to ISO 45001 is not a need of the standard itself.
The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) has made the migration protocols to assist compliant organizations, certification bodies, accreditation bodies and rest of the interested parties to get prepared. ISO 45001:2018 can be purchased through the ISO Store.
