Navigating the ISO 14001 Certification Process
Implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS) based on ISO 14001:2015 is a significant achievement. However, many companies choose to certify their EMS through an external certification body. This process can seem daunting, but understanding the steps involved makes preparation much easier. Here’s how the ISO 14001 certification process works and what you need to do.
Certification: What is it and What are the Requirements?
Once your EMS is implemented, certification requires that a certification body sends auditors to review your processes. They will check if your processes meet ISO 14001 requirements. If your EMS meets the standard, they will issue a certificate. This certification shows that your EMS is effective and compliant.
Choosing the Certification Body
Choosing the right certification body is crucial. The auditors will assess your EMS, so having auditors who understand your industry is essential. Check the list of companies certified by the body; it should be readily available. Good auditors help identify issues and improvements that make your EMS truly effective.
The certification body has requirements before auditing your system. You need to use your EMS processes for a certain time to collect records. Perform a full set of internal audits and at least one management review during this period. The certification body will guide you on what is needed for a successful audit. While they can’t consult on implementation, they can provide helpful tips on what to expect.
Stage 1 Certification Audit
The first stage is the documentation audit. The auditors review all your EMS documentation to ensure it meets ISO 14001 requirements. They will issue a report identifying any nonconformities, such as inconsistencies between documents, missing required documents, or records. Use this audit to get tips on best practices and improvements.
Stage 2 Certification Audit
In the second stage, auditors will audit all your EMS processes. They check if your actual activities comply with ISO 14001 and your documentation. This involves interviewing employees, observing activities, and reviewing records and documentation.
If everything is as planned and meets ISO 14001, or if identified nonconformities have been addressed, they will issue a certification. The choice of certification body affects how well this news is received by interested parties. Choose a reputable, accredited certification body to ensure your certification is widely accepted.
Ongoing Certification
Initial certification is just the beginning. The certification process continues, at least yearly, to ensure the EMS is maintained and improved. This cycle typically lasts three years, consisting of surveillance audits and full re-certification audits. The cycle ensures your EMS processes get better over time.
Certify to Make Your EMS More Beneficial
The best way to prepare for a certification audit is to use the OHSMS processes and procedures. Performing internal audits, corrective actions, improvements, and management reviews prepares you for the certification auditors. It also sets you up to maintain and improve your OHSMS over time. Improving your system was the goal when implementing an OHSMS, wasn’t it?
